Sneak Peek: "M" Family

We are SoFly!

Once a month I meet up with a group called SoFly. We eat, we talk, we shoot. We share ideas and a common passion: photography. The photos below are from the last meetup in January. We brought our favorite portrait lens and took headshots.

Meet a few of the SoFly girls...
Kathleen Nugent and Rebekah Hood. SoFly is the brainchild of Rebekah. She has so many goals for the group and I'm so excited to see how we grow.

Meet Laurie Kleinhenz.

Meet our two newest members. The two Samantha's: Samantha Wykoff and Samantha Balanovich. Samantha Wykoff traveled all the way from Key Biscayne to Jupiter for the meetup. That's about a two hour drive. Such dedication.

I'm so incredibly proud and honored to be part of such an awesome group of talented female photogs. We all have a passion for what we do and love the opportunity to share and grow with each other. I'm looking forward to seeing all my SoFly girls next week!!

New Milestone

Okay, so I don't know if you'd call it a "milestone", but today was a big day. My daughter, Kaylee, got her ears pierced. She's told me for over a year that she had planned to get her ears pierced when she turned 5. The past month or so she had a change of heart and decided that the optimal time was to do it at the ripe age of 4. So I nervously took her to the mall (gasp) to get her ears pierced. Now I'm normally a really laid back kind of mom, but today I was "that" mom. After badgering the poor lady at the store with a serious of questions and carefully monitoring where the placement of the holes were to go, I held onto Kaylee tightly and braced myself. Everything went smoothly of course and before I knew it Kaylee was donning her new pink gemstone earrings.

I can't help but get a little emotional. My baby is not such a baby anymore. She's growing up so fast. She seems so mature and wise beyond her years. Just the changes in the past two weeks have been incredible. Who new 4 was the new 30?

Sneak Peek: Tookie

When I was down in Hollywood a few weekends ago for the Sow A Seed fundraiser, I spent some time with Kat Braman's little guy, Tookie. He's adorable and so much fun. I have to admit, I do get a little "childish" at times when photographing the little ones. Anything to get a smile and some laughs. We ran around the back alley, played peek-a-boo behind walls and even had a sec for some rock art on the street. Here are some photos of our quick 10 minute session:

Sneak Peek: "M" Family

Had to share these. What a beautiful young family. I woke up early in the morning for this session and it was the foggiest day ever! It was so thick! I thought we were going to have to reschedule, but we decided to go for it. By the time we got to the location, the fog melted away and it turned into the perfect day. Little B had plans of her own. We weren't long into the session when she decided it was nap time so we called it a day.

I think my favorite part was watching Daddy interact with his precious baby girl. So much love in his eyes. It was really sweet!

Announcing: Refuge Surf Shop

This is going to be a big year for my family. My husband, Steve, decided to fulfill a dream and open up a surf shop. I need to preface this by saying what an avid surfer he is. He lives in the water. I often joke that I'm a "surf widow". Many of my friends are still skeptical that he even exists since half of them have never met him, let alone seen him. So, opening a shop seems like a perfect fit for him. The shop is going to be in Hobe Sound, FL, which is about 14 miles north of Jupiter. Great location near the beach. This place has a lot of history, too. It was built, I believe, in the 70's and has been a doctor's office, library and most recently a barber shop. Pretty soon the buildout will begin to transform it into Refuge Surf Shop. He's hoping to open in March 2010.

Here are a few views of the building. They were all taken by Steve with a p&s camera. Not too shabby. =) A new sign is in the works and will replace the barber shop sign very soon!

Share the Love: The Ultimate Family Photography Event to benefit the Haitian relief effort

Mark your calendars... I'll be photographing at this event, along with other amazing SoFly photographers. What a great way to let the love and beauty of your family help those less fortunate!

The Details:
30 minute mini sessions will be held in downtown Hollywood for $100 per session. All proceeds will go to benefit Sow A Seed. 100% of print sales profits will also benefit Sow a Seed. People are encouraged to arrive early as sessions will be provided on a first come first serve basis. A representative from Sow a Seed will be present to accept the $100 donations as well as to educate the participants on its mission in Haiti. All images will be available for viewing online and participants will be able to purchase prints for personal use.

About Sow a Seed:
Sow a Seed is a non-profit organization created by a group of young professionals to provide the basic fundamentals for disadvantaged children living in extreme poverty in Haiti.

A Princess Affair: The Invitation

I'm planning my daughter's 4th birthday party. She wants a Disney Princess theme. We went over the details and she was very specific about what she wanted and decided that it was a girly affair so no boys were allowed. I might have gone a little overboard on the theme. It's going to be Disney Princess on crack. Seriously. I'll have to take a photo of the load of party favors I picked up yesterday. Ridiculous, but I love it!

I wanted to share photos of the invitations that I mailed out today. I wanted something special and something to set the tone for the party. It's going to (hopefully) be a fairy tale event.

Happy New Year 2010!

It has been quite a year for Jennifer Weiss Photography! I've always loved the art of taking pictures. I feel so fortunate that I was able to turn my passion into a career. At the beginning of the year, after spending two years as a part time photographer, I decided to put my head down and really grow my business, focusing on families and children. My website and blog officially launched in March 2009. Since then, in addition to the awesome clients I've had the opportunity to work with, I've been involved with a couple of wonderful charitable events and also joined an extraordinary group of female photographers called SoFly.

As in 2009, I have many goals that I want to achieve in the next year. I'm not one to write down resolutions, but I do like to reflect back on the past year and think about ways I can improve and grow. Being new to the business, I've hit some road blocks along the way and have made my fair share of mistakes. No one is perfect. What I am proud of is that despite it all, I didn't give up. I've been able to keep my head up. More importantly, I've learned from making mistakes. Throughout it all, I've had the support of my family, friends and clients. I appreciate all the encouragement through emails and comments. Thank you so much!

I'm excited about the year ahead and ready to take on new challenges. 2010 is going to be a great year, I just know it!

Sneak Peek: "C" Family

My very last session of 2009! What a fun one it was, too! The family flew in from all over - Rochester, Boston and Chicago - to spend some time in Jupiter for the holidays. I had the pleasure of photographing them at "their" beach. =) They were such troopers! It was crazy windy, but we had a really fun session. I even put Dad and John to work. Thanks for toting my equipment around for me and manning the umbrella between takes!

My neighbor and close friend was looking for something special to give her mother for Christmas this year. She thought her mom would treasure a photo of all her grandchildren... and she was right! Debbie graciously invited my family over to her home tonight for her annual Christmas get together. Her mom told me how much she loved the photos and is proudly displaying them in several rooms of her home. I love my job!

Had a fun session with my two favorite neighbors and their cousin. As usual, with these two boys, it was quite an adventure. My dear, Sam, fell into the water at the beginning of the shoot. Yes, another photo session with my girls! The perks of being a photographer. =) I had two very different ideas for photos this year and decided to do them both. First it was "Winter in Florida" and now this! Things rarely go as planned. Today was no exception! Elle cried nearly the entire time and when she wasn't crying she was eating dirt. It was a riot! I had the pleasure of photographing the "D" family over the weekend. It was such a fun session, til we wrapped and found that we had been locked into the garden. Thanks security guard! Not a bad place to be since it's amazing, but we were all relieved to finally find an exit and not have to spend the night there.

SoFly Meetup: October

The ultra talented SoFly photographers met up tonight in downtown Delray Beach. 12 photographers and 2 stunningly beautiful models on a rooftop. Gorgeous weather. Dinner afterwards at Docs All American diner. I learn so much every time. Thank you so much Beka, our SoFly founder, for hooking this whole thing up. What a great evening! Sometimes I do not feel worthy!

Special thanks to Madame Butterfly for the gorgeous wedding gowns and to Delray Beach Florist and Anna Flowers for the super chic bouquets. So perfect I didn't think they were real! More photos from tonight's meetup will be posted soon. Stay tuned!

New lens

I couldn't wait to get out and shoot with my new lens. I haven't really had the opportunity to take it for a real test drive, but while I was dropping my cousin off at his hotel, I took a photo of the lobby. Hopefully I'll get out this week and get some nice shots with my new super wide.

Pumpkin Patch '09

I finally took the girls to the pumpkin patch. Luckily there were tons of pumpkins strewn on the ground to choose from. Great for photo ops, unless you have a 10 month old who does not like having her photo taken. Absolutely hates it! I thought this shot was pretty funny. I told Kaylee to smile at the camera while I tried to get Elle's attention. It took a few shots to get Elle to actually look at the camera. By the time I got Ellery's attention, Kaylee was a little distracted by the boy pulling a wagon to her left. Didn't work out quite as I had hoped, but cute.

Sneak Peek: Birthday Girl

Typically to get smiles, I ask little girls to smile like their favorite princess. Works like a charm most of the time. However, it was a bit of a challenge using my princess technique during this session. I should have brushed up on my Cars characters!

What to do when all else fails? Bust out the jumbo lollipop. = Big smiles!!!

Buddy Walk 2009

The morning started out on the chilly side, but it didn't stop the crowds from coming out and supporting the Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization's annual Buddy Walk in Lake Worth. It looked like record numbers showed and participated in the one-mile Advocacy Walk or the 5K Fitness Walk at John Prince Park. Here are a few shots from the walk.

It's so funny how things change when you have a second child. The rules seem to go out the window. Elle had her very first lollipop today, something that I would not have contemplated when Kaylee was her age. It's hard when the little one wants to do everything that big sis does. It was a huge sticky mess, but at least she had a good time. It was fun watching them enjoy their lollipops together.

Sneak Peek: "H" Family

It seems like every time I do a session I either fall in love with the photos or the location. This time was no exception. This family was gorgeous for starters and the location was amazing! So, I present to you some lovely photos from my session with the "H" family. I want to post them all, but it is for their holiday card and all and I would hate to spoil the surprise. I included one that is out of the norm for me. Normally I stick to all richly saturated color, but I just liked the look of the photo with Mom and son in a more organic tone. The youngest brother carried around Buddy from Toy Story. He tried to sneak into a few photos, but I caught him every time. That would have been fun now that I think about it. Maybe next time, Buddy!

Love this photo. He was so proud that he got to pick the spot. Good choice!

Yesterday afternoon's event, Fashioning-A-Cure, was both fashionable and fun! It also tugged at my heart strings at times. I was honored to be part of the event. I was very moved by guest speaker, Kristin Hoke. I really admire her courage, determination and strength. My heart has a special place for all the models I got to work with. Many had moves I've never seen before. ;) Each one of you ROCKS!

Scarf Dress

Today was the big event at Admiral's Cove in Jupiter and it was a huge success! I had a minor malfunction with my camera equipment. I'll save that for another post. Other than that it went smoothly. I brought home a goody bag for my daughter, Kaylee, and she decided she wanted to play dress up with the scarf that was inside. What to do? Make a totally fashionable scarf dress of course! A little on the risque side, but cute!

Last night went off without a hitch, although I heard a man fell into one of the waterfall areas. I hear only his ego was bruised a bit. I always miss the good stuff! There was also some last minute excitement at the silent auction tables as two women were battling it out to the very last second for the Alan Jackson meet and greet tickets. I won't mention any names. =) Hats off to Pink Purse for pulling off such a successful event. Thank you to Guanabanas and everyone for coming together during this extremely difficult time for Julie Reed and her family. It was great seeing her smile!

Benefit for the Reed Family at Guanabanas

I'll be out at Guanabanas on Thursday night to support and raise funds for the Reed Family. They are the father and son who drowned fishing in lake Okeechobee on September 5th. His wife, Julie, and two children were left with no life insurance. Pink Purse is trying to help her through these tough times.

I recently joined a group called SoFly and went to my first meetup focusing on natural light photography yesterday. Wow! SO much fun!! Even the rain couldn't put a damper on our good time! I met a bunch of absolutely fantabulous ladies and seriously can't wait til the next meetup! Thanks again to the gorgeous models, Amanda, Burçin and Mackenzie, who so graciously put up with all of us for two hours! It's not easy being on that side of the camera. =)

It's official... I love newborn photography! This precious little lady is only 8 days old! I had big plans for her, but she had even bigger plans for me. She was awake the entire session! I tried waiting her out and creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, but she decided there was just too much going on to sleep.

So this was my first holiday photo shoot of the year. The "C" family was so easy to work with. Piece of cake! I LOVE sessions like this! The goal: Get a fab photo to use for their holiday card. Mission accomplished!... at least I hope they will love their photos as much as I do!

Everyone assumes that I have tons of photos of my kids. You'd think so, right? I really don't take as many as I should or would like to of my little beauties. I was testing out a new location and got some photos of my girls. Maybe next time I'll even get them in the same frame!

These photos are so "Elle". She may be only 6-1/2 months old, but I'm convinced she knows exactly what she's doing. Here she is refusing to give me even an ounce of a smile.

My Little Elle

Ellery turned 4 months old a few days ago. I can hardly believe it! Where has the time gone?! She recently found her hands and her thumb. Yes, we have another thumb-sucker amidst us. It comforts her and she sleeps through the night now so be it. Elle can roll herself over and she loves to coo. She also started grunting yesterday. I don't think the service around here is fast enough for her. So fuuny! I just love her to pieces!!! We had some one on one girl time today and I took some really cute photos of my little angel. She's such a smiley girl!

The girls and I spent the entire afternoon with Grandma to celebrate her special day. We enjoyed a homemade Thai lunch, a delicious cake made by "Aunt" Barbara, and played outdoors with the kitty cats. Kaylee even raided Grandma's closet and scored a pair of high heels. (She's totally into dress-up these days!) It was such a fun time. We love you so much and wish you a very Happy Birthday! XOXO
